Essay Instructions: This research proposal should focus on religious tolerance in the Americas beginning with colonial America. This is a proposal for a 10-15 page research paper for American History prior to 1765. This essay should critically examine one of the major themes, events, issues, personalities, or organizations discussed during the class. The paper should be based on a combination of primary and secondary sources. If you have any unique ideas for this project please let me know. I would love to focus on a more interesting topic, such as women in early colonial times and did they have a lasting impact on shaping the American style of life.

Thomas More's Utopia did not serve as a basis for discussion of church reform. Could it have had that function? What ideas or criticisms does it offer for rethinking the state of European Christianity?

I do believe it could be served as a basis for discussion of church reform. The whole point of Utopia is about Thomas More's own idea of what European Christianity should have been. In his book, he talks about religious tolerance, shunning of senseless murder(Spanish Inquisition at that time) and socialism (community helping each other). These are all reforms he wished to impose on Roman Catholicism which was blatantly corrupt at the time. He also pokes fun at clergy ranks of Roman Catholicism and it is also interesting how Utopians embrace science and technology and stress education among people. It's a complete opposite of what Europe was doing during More's time.

King Asoka is one of the most fascinating figure from India’s distant past, the last major emperor in the Mauryan dynasty, whose empire spread across the Indian sub continent and the present day Afghanistan to Bengal.He acquired the title of “Asoka the Great” through the relevance of his superior reign, and his efforts to make India a place of serenity, by advocating social concern, religious tolerance, and conquest through the teaching of Dharma.

Social conern- battle of kalinga made asoka feel remorseful,therefore he became a buddhist.
